Tenterfield’s original cemetery was located in Queen’s Park (now the Henry Parkes Memorial Public School). The present cemetery was gazetted in 1873. Many of the old headstones from Queens Park have been relocated to the new cemetery.
The cemetery is a serene place steeped in history, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped the Tenterfield region. From pioneers to bushrangers, headstones tell stories of resilience and community. It is a peaceful spot to reflect on the past and a must visit for history lovers and travellers.
The cemetery consists of monumental areas divided into denominational areas, a large modern lawn section and four columbaria. There is an area within the cemetery which appears unused but is actually the unmarked burial sites of approximately 20 Chinese from the 1850s.
The Tenterfield War Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) site located in the south-eastern corner of the Tenterfield Cemetery. During the Second World War a military camp was established at Tenterfield close to the railway line and the Queensland border.
The war cemetery contains eight war burials of service personnel who died in incidents in the camp. Each grave is marked with a commission headstone, inscribed with the veteran’s military service details and the emblem of their service branch. At the front of the cemetery is a black marble memorial plaque laid in cement surround in remembrance of 200 soldiers from Tenterfield who died on the battlefields during the First World War.
