Rel. Wednesday 26 July 2023
At the 26 July Ordinary Council meeting, Council resolved to sell the property at 157 Rouse Street, Tenterfield – the Tenterfield Visitor Information Centre (VIC), currently wholly funded and managed by Council.
The Chief Executive Office has asked local real estate agents to list the property (Lot 11/DP1241545) for $700,000.
This is a key part of efforts to return Council to financial stability to ensure long-term sustainability of core Council services. Sale proceeds will reduce debt and remove ongoing maintenance, depreciation, and outgoings with the building.
Council acknowledges the important role of visitor information services and has identified an alternative social enterprise model to be established and managed by the Tenterfield Chamber of Tourism, Industry and Business. This presents a positive opportunity for stakeholders to own and lead the strategic direction of a new and innovative service model that best suits their needs to boost visitor economy. There is no doubt that the best people to lead and grow the tourism economy are the operators and the shires business community they have skin in the game, they are invested, and they know their market the best.
Council will also commence transitioning services and associated collateral to the Tenterfield Chamber of Tourism, Industry and Business. Final handover of all soft services will be completed as soon as practical to ensure a smooth transition of services.
Council acknowledges the outstanding service of the many volunteers who’ve worked at the VIC giving visitors directions and advice on the attractions of our town and Shire.
